Students were given a paradoxical question (i.e. “If energy is conserved, why is there still an energy crisis?”) to elicit relevant scientific concepts. Some thoughtful notes were selected for sharing in class to stimulate further discussion.

Students were also required to keep a learning diary to reflect on what has been learned. However, Hidy did not provide much guidance, apart from the following scaffolds:
