Generate inquiry questions

In order to produce some inquiry questions, teachers may carry out Knowledge Building Talk (“KB Talk”); this normally involved students sharing whatever they are thinking, with the goal of advancing knowledge as a collective group. Library books and videos can be used as teaching material, and some students are selected to share what they already know about the topic. The entire class is then invited to generate questions from the given resources.

Examples from Year 1 of a primary school science class:

  • 為甚麼雌蕊和雄蕊要在同一朵花上?
  • 無花果為甚麼不會開花,就能結果?
  • 陸上植物有葉綠素,那麼水生植物有沒有葉綠素?為甚麼?

A refined design would be presenting students with a news article (i.e. an authentic real-world scenario) at the beginning of the module to generate questions, e.g. using a news article.

Under this context, more hypothetical questions were found, such as:

  • 如果不斬去這棵樹,這棵樹可否生長?
  • 如果斬去那棵樹,可否種在其它地方或有什麼後果?
